With its playful slant on Edgbaston Reservoir - Birmingham-on-Sea is the first of five vintage-style travel posters encouraging the use of buses. The composition is a soft homage to British poster artist Laurence Fish who became prolific in the 1950s for his charming designs celebrating traditional English getaways. To get to the heart of all the classic design signatures and palettes used across travel posters from around the world, I gathered around 150 of my favourite vintage posters that informed my direction for the 5 posters, each of which I challenged myself to stand boldly as an artwork, like all the classics. Splendid Birmingham actress Lorna Nickson Brown has been cast for the lead role in this poster, punctuating a summer-tinged scene celebrating our city.
